Regina Trades & Skills – Helping keep a roof over our heads

Students from Regina Trades & Skills Centre’s (RTSC) Commercial & Industrial Roofing class, instructed by Brendan Lowndes, owner of Brendan’s Roof Repair, is reroofing 5,000 square feet of one of Regina’s Food Banks’ buildings.

Brendan’s Roof Repair scouted out this project and made all of the arrangements as well as went above and beyond by setting up guardrails, donating the use of tools as well as providing an extra supervisor and staff to help make this project a reality. This was all done above and beyond his contract of being an instructor.

Community projects with non-profit partners are ideal for students. This on-site training is invaluable to helping the students secure employment upon completion of their practical training. Not only do they give back to the community, but they are saving Regina Food Bank thousands of dollars in labour costs. They also get exposure to the actual work, the challenges of that work and the weather elements that they are not exposed to in a shop setting.

This project would have originally cost the Regina Food Bank well over $115,000. However, with RTSC students doing the labour at no cost and the generosity of community partners coming together, this project has been reduced to a final bill of around $55,000. This is the second phase of the project, RTSC did the first phase in 2020 and will finish this Phase 2 this season.

“Regina Trades & Skills Centre’s investment in labour, materials, skill, and time allows us to direct more of our resources into securing food and feeding our clients,” said David Froh, Vice-President, Community, for Regina Food Bank. “This is a $60,000 cost savings for Regina Food Bank, which translates to 180,000 meals, and emphasizes how powerful it is when partnerships in the non-profit sector form. We also believe in supporting skill building opportunities, and this is the benefit the Regina Trades & Skills Centre students gain from this partnership.”

Bryan Allen, Scaffolding Manager with Icon Construction & Scaffolding says, “Icon Construction & Scaffolding is proud to be involved in such a worthwhile cause and assist a community minded group that does so much for so many.”

Thanks to supporting partners, Brendan’s Roof Repair, Icon Construction & Scaffolding, Roofmart, RBC Future Launch, and Over The Top Roofing for their significant contributions to this major project.
